The room reads within its class, so the surfaces inside it are assumed to be fine. That assumption doesn’t hold in a semiconductor fab. Surface particle concentration, reported per square metre for an SCP grade or per wafer for process reporting, tells you what was detected on the inspected surface. Deposition rate, in particles per square metre per hour, tells you how quickly particles accumulated on a test surface. Surface chemical contamination, reported as mass per area, tells you which target chemicals were found and in what quantity.

These are not interchangeable. Converting an airborne result into a surface acceptance result requires a justified model and validation for your application. An ISO air class is not a wafer surface specification. A conventional light-scattering airborne particle counter also does not establish surface chemical cleanliness. That calls for an analytical method chosen for the target element, ion or compound, which is what ISO 14644-10:2022 covers.

Where Surfaces Are Most At Risk

Start with the route contamination takes to a vulnerable surface. Exposed wafers and reticles, wafer-contact components, FOUP interiors and interfaces, load ports and tool interiors all warrant attention, along with work surfaces and operator touchpoints wherever transfer is credible. Which of these matters most depends on your process sensitivity and the contamination route rather than on a fixed order. For chemical delivery components, separate residue on internal surfaces from contamination carried in the process liquid or gas.

A room measurement may not represent conditions inside a mini-environment or a process tool. ISO 14644-9:2022 generally favours direct measurement where the surface allows it, with indirect methods for complex geometry. Note that an optical detection is not automatically a chemically identified particle, and two optical systems will not necessarily report equivalent sizes. Where that distinction affects the decision, use defect review or chemical analysis. Witness surfaces and monitor wafers answer a narrower question: what did this exposure, or this handling route, add? ISO 14644-17:2021 asks that a witness surface sit in the same plane, as close as possible to the vulnerable surface and at the same electrical potential, during manufacturing exposure.

Tape lifts and swabs suit compatible equipment or facility surfaces once recovery and sampling-induced contamination have been evaluated. They are not default sampling methods for production wafers or reticles, where adhesive residue, abrasion and fibres can affect both the surface and the result.

Particle counters have a role here as well. For suitable components, you can detach particles using a controlled gas or liquid stream and count them with an optical particle counter. That is the flushing and measurement route described in ISO 14644-9, and where the carrier is a liquid it relies on liquid particle counting rather than airborne measurement. A counter used inside a qualified extraction method has a different measurement boundary from one monitoring room air. In that role it supports an indirect assessment of a surface rather than an airborne one, and the method needs its own qualification covering detachment, transfer, blanks and surface compatibility.

What A Clean Result Does Not Prove

A zero count, or a result below the detection limit, is a bounded measurement. It’s not proof that an object carries no contamination. Report it together with the size threshold, the analyzed area and the limitations of the method.

The same caution applies in reverse. An airborne excursion that coincides with a rise in defects is an investigation lead, not a confirmed cause. Test it against wafer maps, the process sequence, equipment condition and repeat measurements before assigning blame. ISO 14644-17 does include an approximate relationship between air classes and deposition rate levels, but it is intended for design work when measured data is unavailable. It’s not a substitute for a measured surface result.

So Where Does Air Monitoring Fit?

Air monitoring tells you about the environment around your surfaces, with the resolution and history needed to support an investigation when conditions change.
